DEI is NOT the Villain

*** I send my condolences for those suffering the loss of loved ones today. I can only begin to imagine the feelings you’re experiencing, and I hope you are surrounded with nothing but love and support as you grieve. ***
Last night (January 29th, 2025), a tragic accident occurred where an American Airlines flight on its path for landing was struck by a military helicopter resulting in the loss of all the lives on board both aircrafts. In this time of mourning, people look for comfort and understanding in what could have caused such an accident. We look to the leaders of our nation to address the incident with respect, honor and empathy, and we come together to be there for those who are suffering the most from losing their loved ones so abruptly.
And all that in mind, this morning we instead witness our administration use this horrible tragedy to further push the hateful narrative against diversity, equity and inclusion programs. This should be making EVERYONE angry. Regardless of political affiliation.
As an advocate, I WILL NOT sit by silent for this narrative that is being pushed. My efforts of advocating for inclusion go so much further than just being ‘kind’ to people with disabilities and differences. Literally blaming people with cognitive disabilities or differences for a tragedy is beyond disgusting and a narrative we really need to be checking at the door.
Let’s clear some things up.
Ensuring fair and equal rights for employment does NOT mean less qualified individuals are being hired for jobs over more qualified individuals. You have to be able to perform the requirements of the role. People with delayed cognitive abilities are not taking jobs that require high cognitive response abilities.
All this narrative does is put those with disabilities at risk and losing opportunities for jobs they deserve a fair opportunity at.
DEI programs are such an incredible opportunity for so many different people to not only be fairly given opportunities, but also provide ongoing workplace programs, support and resources for those who need it.
It’s taking NOTHING from you except maybe time to educate yourself on why it’s important, and how we much we gain from an empathetic approach.
I will not stand for the idea that DEI is the villain . Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is not a trend to squash. Don’t allow for the attempts to erase the progress we have made.
I refuse to let go of my mission of teaching others the importance of EMPATHY, basic human rights, and equality.
I’m sad, I’m angry… but I’m also empowered.
Because, we cannot let this be the downfall of our advocacy work. We cannot stop fighting.
For our loved ones who fall under the “DEI HIRES”, and for our children who I hope get to lead a much more empathic world with strength and dignity.
We’re only just getting started. 🫶🏻
